What Is Carer's Allowance?

Carer's Allowance is a taxable benefit for people who spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone with substantial care needs.

Unlike the disability benefits, Carer's Allowance is means-tested. Earnings affect eligibility, though savings do not.

Can Expats Claim?

Carer's Allowance can sometimes be exported if you moved abroad before 2021 and meet specific conditions. However, the rules are strict and complex, so expert guidance matters.

Who Can Claim Carer's Allowance?

You Must Be

  • Aged 16 or over
  • Spending at least 35 hours a week caring
  • Earning £151 or less per week (after certain deductions)
  • Not in full-time education (21+ hours)
  • Habitually resident in the UK (or meet export conditions)

The Person You Care For

  • Must receive a qualifying benefit (Attendance Allowance, PIP Daily Living, DLA Care Component, etc.)
  • Can be a family member, friend, or neighbor
  • You don't have to live with them
  • Only one person can claim Carer's Allowance for each disabled person

Important Things to Know

Earnings Limit

You can earn up to £151 per week after tax, National Insurance, and certain expenses. This is approximately £7,852 per year. Pension income does not count toward this limit.

Impact on Other Benefits

If you claim Carer's Allowance, it may reduce the person you care for's Severe Disability Premium or other benefits. We help you calculate whether claiming is financially beneficial in your situation.

Underlying Entitlement

Even if you cannot receive Carer's Allowance payment because you already get State Pension, you may have underlying entitlement which protects your National Insurance record and supports related credits.

Carer's Allowance While Living Abroad

Carer's Allowance is generally not exportable to most countries. However, there are important exceptions.

You May Qualify If

  • You moved to an EEA country or Switzerland before January 1, 2021
  • The person you care for gets an exportable UK disability benefit
  • You have strong UK National Insurance contributions
  • You meet specific EU coordination rules

Complex Rules Apply

The exportability of Carer's Allowance depends on:

  • When you moved abroad
  • Which country you live in
  • Your NI contribution history
  • The disabled person's benefit status

Expert advice is essential - we assess your specific circumstances to determine whether you can claim Carer's Allowance from abroad.
