What Is Personal Independence Payment?

PIP is a non-means-tested benefit for working-age adults (16-66) who have difficulty with daily living tasks or getting around due to a long-term physical or mental health condition.

Unlike Attendance Allowance, PIP has two components - Daily Living and Mobility - and each can be awarded at a Standard or Enhanced rate depending on the severity of your needs.

Important for Expats

PIP can be paid to British nationals living in certain EEA countries or Switzerland if you have strong UK National Insurance contributions and meet residency conditions. The rules are complex, but many expats qualify without realizing it.

Two Components, Multiple Rates

Daily Living

For help with everyday tasks such as:

  • Preparing and cooking food
  • Washing, bathing, and using the toilet
  • Dressing and undressing
  • Communicating and understanding
  • Managing medication
  • Making decisions about money

Mobility

For help with moving around, including:

  • Planning and following journeys
  • Moving around safely
  • Physical difficulty walking
  • Orientation and navigation
  • Severe mental health conditions affecting mobility
  • Visual or cognitive impairments

Maximum Weekly Payment

£184.30

Enhanced Daily Living + Enhanced Mobility

= £9,583.60 per year

Why PIP Claims Are Complex

PIP is one of the most difficult benefits to claim successfully. The assessment process uses a points-based system with 12 activities, and many genuine claimants are initially refused.

For British nationals living abroad, the complexity increases further due to residence rules, cross-border healthcare evidence, and understanding which EU regulations apply.
