Completing an Attendance Allowance Application

An Attendance Allowance application is about much more than simply listing your medical conditions.

The important part is explaining how those conditions affect your everyday life and the help or supervision you need as a result.

One common mistake is unintentionally downplaying difficulties.

Perhaps you can get dressed - but it takes significantly longer, causes pain or you need somebody nearby.

Perhaps you can shower - but you’re worried about falling.

Or perhaps a family member reminds you to take medication, eat properly or stay safe without you thinking of that as “care”.

These details can matter.

When completing the application, think about your everyday experience, including difficult days, how frequently you need assistance and whether you need help during the day, night or both.

Supporting information about your health condition may also help the DWP understand your circumstances.

GOV.UK currently allows Attendance Allowance applications to be made online or by post.

Caring Futures helps clients work through the application and clearly describe their care and supervision needs, rather than trying to navigate a lengthy application alone.
