Thousands of British nationals have chosen to retire in Spain, but moving abroad does not necessarily mean leaving every UK benefit entitlement behind.

If you are a British national living in Spain and have reached State Pension age, you may still be able to claim Attendance Allowance, depending on your personal circumstances and connection with the UK.

Attendance Allowance is intended for people whose health condition or disability means they need help with personal care or supervision.

This might include difficulties with:

Washing or dressing, getting in and out of bed, taking medication, eating and drinking, staying safe, communicating or managing confusion.

You do not necessarily need someone physically providing all of that help. What matters is the help or supervision you reasonably need.

As Spain is within the EU, certain UK benefits, including Attendance Allowance, may remain available under cross-border benefit rules where the relevant eligibility conditions are met.

At Caring Futures, overseas benefit claims are one of our specialist areas, so we can help you understand your potential eligibility and manage the application process from Spain.
